Where the whole community competes, since 1875
The Brooke Alvinston Agricultural Society has been putting on this fair since 1875, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2025. A century and a half later, its purpose has not changed: promoting agricultural education and entertainment through displays, games and competitions, run by a board, members and volunteers who mostly know each other by first name.
What sets this fair apart is how much of it the community itself makes. The exhibit hall fills with school fair projects, baking, homecraft, grain and garden entries from neighbours of every age, and Friday night the fair crowns its champions in front of everyone: the PumpKing and PumpQueen, the Fair Princess, the Baking Queen, the Master Gardener, the King of the Grains. At Alvinston, someone you know is probably competing.
The fair runs Friday October 2 and Saturday October 3 at the fairgrounds on Walnut Street, with exhibitor drop-off Thursday evening.
Beyond the livestock rings and homecraft hall, this fair keeps traditions you will not find everywhere: the Junior Grain King or Queen contest for corn, soybeans and winter wheat, a full School Fair, a Children's Craft Corner, maple syrup and honey specials, and metal arts. Exhibit entries go in Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30pm, or Friday morning from 8 to noon, before the doors close for judging.
Saturday from 12:45 to 4pm is a ready-made plan for kids: frog jumping, then Oreo cookie stacking, then Candy in the Straw, then olde time games with a family DJ, finishing with the bike and helmet draws at 4. Stay for supper and the demolition derby caps the night at 7.
