The inclusive playground at Canatara Park in Sarnia, with blue and green climbing structures, ramps and swings under bare trees

Canatara Park

1200 Lake Chipican Drive, Sarnia, ON

Nature Trail AccessAccessible PlaygroundNotable Feature

Sarnia's biggest and best-known park. The playground itself is a fully inclusive design — a National Demonstration Site for inclusive play standards — with a Sensory Dome and a ‘Rock n Raft’ feature that seats six and has room for a mobility device. Beyond the playground: the Children's Animal Farm, the Mini Choo Choo Train, a BMX/bike track, sandy Blue Flag beach, and miles of trails. Bring a picnic and plan to stay a while.

  • A go-to favourite — some parents say they've been so often they're looking for somewhere new
  • Recognized for inclusive design that works for kids of all abilities
Heads up
  • A few parents noted the playground area specifically near the Animal Farm could use some upkeep (weeds around the structure, worn paint) as of recent visits — doesn't affect the rest of the park's attractions

Sarnia playground questions, answered

Which Sarnia playgrounds are accessible?

Canatara Park has the city's flagship inclusive playground — a National Demonstration Site for inclusive play standards, with a Sensory Dome and a ‘Rock n Raft’ feature that seats six and has room for a mobility device. Centennial Park downtown also has an accessible playground with flat, stroller-friendly paths. Germain Park's new build is marketed as accessible, though at least one parent has questioned how easily a wheelchair navigates the new equipment.

Which Sarnia playgrounds are best for toddlers?

Parents most often point to Germain Park and Sherwood Village Park, which both have dedicated toddler areas separate from the bigger-kid equipment, and Cathcart Park, which has two structures — one closer to the ground for little ones. Newton Park and Marcin Park both have a baby swing. Mike Weir Park, Jaycee Park, Lion's Park and Kenwick Park also come up for the 1–2 crowd.

Which Sarnia playgrounds have swings?

Sherwood Village Park (rebuilt in 2026), Newton Park, Marcin Park and Harry Turnbull Park all have swing sets, and Newton and Marcin both include a baby swing plus an expression (parent-child) swing. Note that Germain Park's new build did not include a replacement swing set, and older swings have been removed at Twin Lakes Park and Tecumseh Park.

Which Sarnia playgrounds have a splash pad on site?

Tecumseh Park and Kenwick on the Lake Park in Bright's Grove both have a splash pad beside the playground, as does Waterfront Park just over the bridge in Point Edward. Sarnia splash pads generally run 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily and are free. See our splash pad guide for the full county list.

How do I report broken playground equipment in Sarnia?

Report it to the City of Sarnia through their Contact Us form, or call 519-332-0330 and ask for Parks, Recreation & Waterfront. The Tecumseh Park splash pad is run by the YMCA of Sarnia-Lambton as the Cox Youth Centre, but issues there still go through the same City contact.

How many parks does Sarnia have?

The City of Sarnia maintains more than 1,040 acres of parkland across roughly 95 parks. This guide covers the playgrounds local families recommend most, not every park in the city.
